Season 1, Episode 20 Jazz: Risk (1945-1955)

First Aired: January 24, 2001

The episode of Burns' 2001 series “Jazz,” covering the years 1945-55. “The swing era is over,” says narrator Keith David, “and jazz had moved on”---to a risk-filled music called bebop. The focus here is on Charlie Parker, bop's heroin-wracked abiding genius; and Dizzy Gillespie, its “central organizing figure,” as critic Stanley Crouch calls him. Also profiled: Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, the Modern Jazz Quartet, and L.A. “cool” jazzmen Gerry Mulligan and Dave Brubeck, whose brand of jazz, Brubeck Quartet saxman Paul Desmond once said, “was like the sound of a dry martini.”
