Season 1, Episode 12 The Shakers: Hands to Work, Hearts to God

First Aired: August 7, 1985

From 1985: “The Shakers: Hands to Work, Hearts to God,” Burns' second PBS film, explores one of the most enduring of the utopian societies founded in the 18th century. At their peak in the mid-19th century, the Shakers numbered several thousand in communities throughout the Northeast and as far west as Ohio. The Shaker legacy includes exquisitely crafted furniture, tools and architecture. Included: readings from Shaker letters and diaries by Julie Harris and Paul Roebling. Burns directed the film with his then-wife, Amy Stechler Burns. David McCullough narrates.
