While Amy wrestles with a child-custody battle between white foster parents and a black biological grandmother, she notices a distinct chill in her relationship with Bruce Van Exel (Richard T. Jones). Meanwhile, Maxine clashes with a deaf colleague (Marlee Matlin) over a case involving an 8-year-old deaf boy(Gianni Manganelli) who lives with his 18-year-old brother (Christopher L. Pettlet). And Vincent (Dan Futterman) gets a job teaching writing at a community college.
