Season 11, Episode 11 Copyright Criminals

First Aired: January 19, 2010

A look at sampling, in which snippets of old songs are reused in new productions, featuring remarks from hip-hop and electronica artists as well as George Clinton and ex-James Brown drummer Clyde Stubblefield, whose beats have been heavily recycled. The doc explores the history of the technique, which dates to the dawn of hip-hop, along with the controversy it's engendered and the cash it's raised for copyright owners, licensing being something hip-hop pioneers learned about the hard way.
