Season 6, Episode 7 Invoking Justice
First Aired: July 14, 2013
Documentarian Deepa Dhanraj details how, in 2004, Muslim women in South India created a female Jamaat (community council) to deal with issues that affect them, including divorce, spousal abuse and even murder. Previously, such cases were handled by an all-male Jamaat; women were not allowed to be present or defend themselves at meetings. And although there has been resistance to the female version, it has grown in popularity through the years, attracting more than 12,000 members in 12 districts.
