Season 1, Episode 20 A Lion's Trail

First Aired: July 29, 2008

"The Lion's Trail" charts the history of the catchy pop tune "The Lion Sleeps Tonight," which was adapted from a song written by Solomon Linda, a black South African. First popularized in the U.S. by the Weavers as "Wimoweh" in the 1950s, it was reworked by the Tokens and songwriter George Weiss in 1961 as "The Lion Sleeps Tonight," becoming a huge hit. Yet, Linda and his heirs were denied substantial royalties. Included: performances by Ladysmith Black Mambazo and former Weaver Pete Seeger.
