Season 18, Episode 1 John Paul II: The Millennial Pope

First Aired: September 29, 1999

A somber yet vivid psychological portrait of Pope John Paul II. Producer Helen Whitney gathered comments from some 50 interviewees for this exploration of Karol Wojtyla's life and legacy. Included: his Polish background, his relations with Jews and women, and his opposition to communism, consumerism, “liberation theology” and “the culture of death.” “The extraordinary thing about this Pope,” says Whitney, “is his extraordinary certainty in a time of uncertainty.”
