Question: Do you think that, given the chance, ABC would like to have
Rescue Me on their fall schedule? Are the ratings good enough for them? I ask because the show is basically the same as
The Job (including some of the same cast members), except with firefighters instead of cops. Granted,
Rescue Me is a bit raunchier, but it's still basically the same show as
The Job. When ABC canceled
The Job, I always wondered what they were thinking.
Answer: Let's put it this way:
Denis Leary is better off at FX. He can do his show and realize his vision without fear of network standards and practices, and he also doesn't have to worry so much about ratings. (
Rescue Me has already been renewed for a third season.) The show wouldn't be the same on ABC, and while on FX it looks like a modest hit (I'm thinking its demographics are better than its overall ratings), on ABC it would almost certainly already be a goner. What makes you think the experience with
The Job, which was ahead of its time but far from a success, would make ABC covet this show, even if execs may privately admire it for its daring?
