Question: I DVR'd
Swingtown most of the summer and caught up with it before summer's end. I was curious to see what all the hype was about (mostly it being too racy for network TV), and I am glad I watched. It was a great show, not too racy by any means. I can understand that maybe the subject of the show may have been too much for some, but it was quite intriguing to see how it played into these people's lives and emotions. Please tell me this show is going to be renewed for next year. TV very rarely gets a good drama, and I think this is one of the winners for this year.
Answer: As far as I know, no decision has been made yet about the show's future. There have been reports that CBS/Paramount may shop the show around to cable outlets if CBS decides not to bring it back, and this is one of those rare cases in which I think that might actually make sense. With the freedom even basic cable enjoys (including what you see nowadays on risk-takers like FX and AMC), the show could possibly push the sexual-revolution envelope a bit further than the coy "aren't we naughty" approach
Swingtown so often took. I wasn't much of a champion of
Swingtown, but found myself watching it more often than not as the summer waned, enjoying it as a simple but fun diversion. I know that certain key CBS execs are very fond of this show and would like to find a way for it to continue, but when they banished it to Fridays midway through the run (in favor of the more generic
Flashpoint, which is almost certainly going to return), that betrayed a lack of confidence that might have sealed its fate. As summer alternative programming, CBS could do and has done far worse than
Swingtown. But where and if it goes from here, hard to say.
