I'm anxious to see Pushing ...
Question: I'm anxious to see
Pushing Daisies because it's my kind of show, but in the promos currently airing, it looks oh-so-much like
Tru Calling. Many of us loved that show and were sad to see it canceled, so I'm wondering how
Daisies is different. Or is it just that
Tru came before its time?
Answer: Oh, for the love of... [
deep breath]. These two shows are on different planets, creatively. While trying to be respectful to the seemingly undying
Tru cult, all I can think that connects the two is the ability of its lead characters to interact with dead people, since (if I remember right) Tru worked in a morgue and got messages from dead people that sent her back to relive the previous day to save lives and right wrongs.
Tru Calling, though perhaps not without humor, was basically a supernatural thriller, while
Pushing Daisies is a bright, fantastical comedy about a man whose touch can restore the dead to life (briefly), allowing him and a private eye to solve crimes, not turn back time. The procedural element is only one aspect of
Daisies. ABC's description of it as a "forensic fairy tale" makes about as much sense as anything, but comparing it to any other show is a mistake. Tonally and otherwise, it's wholly an original.
