Question: Your help is needed for a television-fan campaign. Lifetime's Side Order of Life is a show that has not only been fresh and entertaining, but has a message that inspires those of us living with cancer. (I'm a two-time young-adult cancer survivor.) For once, a television show dealt with cancer in a responsible, realistic way without curing or killing the character in one season or at least by sweeps week. This show allowed us to see a character as a survivor, without the clichéd victimization so popularly practiced in the mainstream media. With its renewal still in a state of limbo, those of us who love the show are fighting to keep it alive. The writers' strike affected many shows, but Side Order of Life cancellation would be an absolute blow to the cancer-survivor community. For once Hollywood shows its heart, and now we are threatened with the loss of our voice. The show is also a tremendous teaching show. Cancer doesn't just affect the ones who receive the diagnosis; the friends, caregivers, co-workers and community that surrounds us are all impacted by cancer. Thus the show is for everyone and it should matter to everyone, besides just being quality television. Will you join me in passing this message on to your readers? Will you help us save this show? We've been e-mailing, calling Lifetime and nothing to date has helped create enough of a ripple.... we need a tidal wave. Those countless fans I've connected with over the Internet are all desperate for this show's survival. In fact, Jericho fans have inspired us. They sent peanuts to CBS, right? Well, we are asking people to send menus (takeout menus, pilfered menus or mock menus of their own design) to Lifetime. Obviously, this is a play on the title of the show as well as the character Vivy's assertion that "Life is the main course, the appetizer and the dessert." We believe in our show just as much as Jericho fans did. This message and this story needs to continue! Here's our website.
Answer: I generally keep a distance from fan campaigns, neither actively encouraging nor discouraging them. But it's impossible to ignore such a personal appeal (one of several, by the way). So consider the word spread, and good luck.
