I nearly wept with relief when
House returned Tuesday night (March 28) after a several-week absence. I hadn't yet recovered from sitting through one of the most miserable hours of
American Idol — sorry, it was
the worst hour I can remember. Is this century going to be the death of music as we know it? Horrid songs, rotten arrangements, and even the few singers I've liked were dull-to-dreadful.
Ugh.
Then House roared into gear with a gripping mystery leavened by some Odd Couple humor as House and Wilson (temporarily homeless thanks to his wrecked marriage) became roommates. Very Oscar and Felix, as House lay sleepless while Wilson clipped his toenails (off camera, thankfully) and blow-dried his hair. But House is going to keep him around for a while, if only for the food.
What a hoot to see what House had on his TiVo (when he took over the remote from Wilson, natch): a season pass for New Yankee Workshop, episodes of SpongeBob SquarePants, The O.C., Monster Truck Jam and slipped in the mix, an episode of Blackadder, the peerless British comedy that introduced many of us to Hugh Laurie years ago. Now that's a Cheer-worthy in-joke.
Other thoughts on a busy Tuesday:
Confess: Who didn't choke up on Scrubs when a beaming Carla faced all of her hospital friends to announce her pregnancy, even though she knew they all knew, thanks to Turk and J.D. What a beautiful episode. I love this show, which is enjoying a creative high this season, and hate NBC for how shamefully it has treated Scrubs lately (including pairing it with the tone-deaf, laugh-free Teachers).
Are the hippies, B.J. and Tyler, the most enjoyable Amazing Race team ever? They're sweet, they're funny, they're generous (choosing not to yield, when they easily could have sandbagged the horny Frat Boys), and when they hit the mat first to greet Phil, they were wearing matching T-shirts reading "Bowling" and "Moms" (an homage to seasons past). I like at least half the remaining teams, but I adore these guys. The "nerds" Dave and Lori come in a close second: I was screaming while she overthought the statue puzzle. We're getting to the point where I'm going to dread the eliminations, because I'll hate seeing just about any of the remaining teams go.
