Question: I would love to hear more from you on the end of the
Foyle's War series on
Masterpiece Mystery! I thought that the final episode ("All Clear") was brilliant. The balance of the uncertain post-war future with the bright expectation of the war's end was beautifully crafted. The relationships between all the characters were played out in just the right closing tone. The entrance of Andrew after such a long time was a joy. Michael Kitchen's portrayal of Foyle perhaps outshone any episode yet — the mixture of quiet joy at Andrew's return and quiet remonstrance at how he had treated Sam was unmatchable. Even the little inside jokes and poignant touches throughout for those who've watched the whole way through (Foyle driving the car, the door closing behind him as he exited his office for the last time) were just right. I was impressed with how they managed to put so many different possible reactions to the ending of the war into one episode, without it seeming forced or contrived. As I think you said, they finished with dignity. And while I, for one, will follow Foyle, Milner, Sam, Andrew and even Brookie if they decide to return now that the war's over, I have to say it was one of the most satisfying endings to a series I've ever encountered.
Answer: What she said. Seriously, I have little to add to your eloquent summation. I thought the entire series was excellent, and it ended on a high note. Anyone seeking literate, thoughtful, yet suspensefully provocative period crime drama is recommended to seek out all of the seasons of
