I understand you were ...
Question: I understand you were underwhelmed by
Life, but I wonder if subsequent episodes have made you reconsider. I watched it on a lark after the very disappointing
Bionic Woman and found it a breath of fresh air. And it seems to be getting better each week. I'm hoping you've reconsidered. I wouldn't be sad if
Bionic bit the dust, but I'd miss
Life quite a bit.
Answer: Nope, still not a fan, but I'm disliking it less as time goes on. The third episode about the carjacking was maybe the worst, but the fourth episode involving the gay murder and
William Sanderson as the homeless witness/suspect was the best yet. In other words, I'm still finding the show awfully uneven and not worth either defending or going out of my way to criticize.
Maybe these comments from Matthew L. will help pinpoint the situation: "I just watched the
Life pilot and could completely understand the polarizing effect the show is having on critics. While there are some intriguing elements, such as the cast, the potentially interesting characters and a few funny moments, this was all weighed down by writing that was entirely lacking in subtlety. It's as if the writers have assumed the audience is incapable of reaching any kind of conclusion on its own. Not to mention how the lead character more often than not crosses over from funny into deeply irritating. Is there any chance that the writing will improve enough to make
Life into the great show it could be?"
Nothing I've seen in subsequent episodes has moved me into the plus column on
Life. The cases aren't especially riveting, and as much as I've liked
Damian Lewis in other projects, I'm afraid I am not charmed or intrigued by his mannered work as the show's star. As Matthew L. notes, this show has polarized critics and viewers, although I find it hard to get passionately worked up about it either way. I will give it this: If I had to pick a crime drama to watch on Wednesdays at 10 pm/ET (and thankfully, I don't), I'd watch
Life over
CSI: NY. Which, admittedly, isn't saying much.
