Question: I just read that CBS plans to bring back an updated version of
Hawaii Five-O with McGarrett's son, Chris, as the boss. I would like to see the series return, but I don't like the idea of having McGarrett's son as the head of
Five-O. Unless I had missed something, Steve didn't have any children. Ed Bernero is already messing up introducing this new character. On the other hand, Chin Ho Kelly had a bunch of kids and it would make sense if one of them headed
Five-O. I hope they don't mess up a classic!
Answer: As long as they don't mess with the classic Morton Stevens theme song, I can probably live with it. And yes, they'd be crazy if at least one of Chin Ho's offspring weren't on the force as well. I guess we have to assume Steve McGarrett had a life off the job we were never privy to, but honestly, the corniness of building a show around a next-generation McGarrett is just one of many aspects of this whole remake idea that gives me pause. Some shows were perfectly of their time, and
Hawaii Five-O is one of them. But CBS once upon a time did very well with crime dramas set in Hawaii (remember
Magnum, P.I.?), so if NBC can stoop so low as to remake
Knight Rider, this was probably inevitable.
