I am really enjoying Dirty ...

Glenn Fitzgerald, Dirty Sexy Money

Question: I am really enjoying Dirty Sexy Money. I think the cast is amazing, and I love anything and everything that Greg Berlanti is attached to (I still miss Everwood). My one complaint is the storyline about how Brian treats his son, which I find cringeworthy and not funny in the least. I know this show is over-the-top and I appreciate that, but his behavior toward this boy is borderline verbally abusive. I actually fast-forward my TiVo through their scenes together. Is it just me needing to find my sense of humor, or is this actually a disturbing part of an otherwise fun show?
Answer: I'm liking Dirty Sexy Money, too, as I've recently noted. The problem with this subplot for me isn't so much that it's disturbing and cruel as that it's just so moronic for Brian to make his bastard child pretend to be an orphan. This show continuously walks a line between the sophisticated and the silly, and in this case, it goes too far over the top. That said, Glenn Fitzgerald's performance as Father (Brother?) Brian absolutely cracks me up. Snarling and growling and doing everything but stamping his feet at every perceived petty slight, despising the interloper Peter Krause, all while wearing his priest's collar, he's the epitome of a spoiled brat who never grew up — pretty much embodying the theme of Dirty Sexy Money. I'm probably also not as disturbed by this storyline because the little boy (Will Shadley) playing Brian Jr. has played his part in this absurd scenario so straight and solemn, so much more the grown-up, which I find an amusing reversal. I see in ABC's release for the Oct. 24 episode (Spoiler alert) that Brian Jr. "feels the need to tell Brian's wife the truth about his paternity," so maybe that will nip this goofy storyline in the bud or at least take it in a more palatable direction. We'll see.
