I wanted to comment on ...
Question: I wanted to comment on something you said in your Golden Globe
predictions regarding the Actress in a TV Drama race. You noted of the nominees that "none of them, honestly, [were] worth mentioning in the same breath as
Friday Night Lights' brilliant
Connie Britton." I have to ask, did you
see the nominees for Actress in a TV Drama? Does your undying love for Connie Britton blind you so much? Let me start off by saying I've always liked Connie Britton, and because of that, I did try to watch
Friday Night Lights, but it wasn't for me. I have no problem with Britton, nor the show. However, to say that Sally Field, Glenn Close, Edie Falco, Holly Hunter and Kyra Sedgwick are unworthy of the same breath as Connie Britton is something close to ignorance. She's great, I'm sure, but we're talking about an Oscar winner, a two-time Oscar winner, a three-time Emmy winner, a Golden Globe winner and Glenn Close, who needs no introduction. Each of these women have turned in outstanding performances this year on their respective shows, and while Britton may deserve to be recognized among them, she should certainly not be placed above them in any way, nor do they deserve the lack of respect you show them by belittling their work in comments like this. Generally I admire the critics' steadfast resolve in attempting to guide the public to
Friday Night Lights; while I might not enjoy it so much, I agree that others should give it a chance. But remarks like the above made by both you and Michael Ausiello only deter me from giving the show another try and almost make me glad not to have Connie Britton recognized by awards committees.
Answer: Well, you sure told me. If I'm guilty of anything, it's hyperbole (without which you can't spell "hype") in service of a good cause. What I should have said is that Connie Britton deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as these other worthy nominees. Sadly, the Globes and Emmys voters don't seem to agree. Which is why I'm not all that sorry I went there.
