Question: I was wondering if the second season of Big Love, which aired from June through August this year, will be eligible for next year's Emmy Awards. I thought this season was even better than the first and that Big Love has one of the most talented casts on the air (my personal favorite is Ginnifer Goodwin as Margene, and, well, Matt Ross is just plain creepy as Alby). Also, do you think the fact that a lot of HBO and Showtime's original programming air outside of the typical September-May TV season hurts their chances for award recognition from the Emmys and Golden Globes?
Answer: This season of Big Love will be eligible for next year's awards, and you may be right that the timing of the show's scheduling might work against it in the nomination process — although sometimes HBO is canny enough to bring a show back right around the time of the balloting, so even though they're really judging on a previous season, the show is back in the public eye. I agree that Big Love hit it out of the park this summer (and Goodwin is spectacular), and now with The Sopranos out of the way, maybe this will be the drama HBO will put most of its Emmy promotional muscle behind. We'll see.
