Catherine Zeta-Jones Gets High
Although they'd never dream of pushing an airline beverage cart in real life — "Watch your elbows, folks!" — many of Hollywood's A-list actresses end up playing flight attendants. Gwyneth Paltrow starred as one in View from the Top. Halle Berry did it in Executive Decision. Now Catherine Zeta-Jones is taking her turn in The Terminal.
As Mrs. Michael Douglas says of her sexy stewardess character: "Amelia is a flight attendant who is pulled together on the outside, but inside, she's a bit of a mess!"
By now, you've heard The Terminal is Steven Spielberg's altruistic fairy tale about a kooky vagabond (played by Tom Hanks) who lives in an airport. Sounds uncomfortable! "We've all been in a terminal," Zeta-Jones agrees. "It's an experience where you want to get in and out, especially in the wake of 9/11. It can be a scary place. People don't make eye contact, they're waiting, they're tired, they're jet-lagged. People don't open up there.
"This is the backdrop to the story of a man who has to live in an airport for nine or 10 months, where he finds these wonderful friendships and relationships," she continues. "It's an amazing idea. Maybe now, after seeing the movie, people will sit next to someone for five hours and develop a friendship!"
