WWE Quietly Fires Hulk Hogan Amid Reports of Major Controversy

Hulkamania is over: The WWE has fired Hulk Hogan.

"WWE terminated its contract with Terry Bollea (aka Hulk Hogan)," a spokesperson told TVGuide.com in a statement. "WWE is committed to embracing and celebrating individuals from all backgrounds as demonstrated by the diversity of our employees, performers and fans worldwide."

The move comes after reports that Hogan was caught going on a racist tirade on tape. According to TMZ, which claims to have heard the tape, the wrestler repeatedly used the N-word.

The WWE's statement was released after fans noticed that all mentions of Hogan were removed from the company's website. Hogan's name is no longer listed on the Hall of Fame page, his merchandise was taken off wweshop.com and he's no longer listed as a judge on USA's Tough Enough. Sources tell TVGuide.com that the reality competition show will still air this Tuesday and a replacement judge will be chosen.

In a lengthy statement to People, Hogan apologized. "Eight years ago I used offensive language during a conversation. It was unacceptable for me to have used that offensive language; there is no excuse for it; and I apologize for having done it. This is not who I am. I believe very strongly that every person in the world is important and should not be treated differently based on race, gender, orientation, religious beliefs or otherwise. I am disappointed with myself that I used language that is offensive and inconsistent with my own beliefs."

Earlier, Hogan shared a cryptic tweet:

Hogan, 61, first wrestled in the WWF (which is now the WWE) in 1979.
