War of the Worlds, the Tom Cruise actioner about angry aliens who could totally benefit from some Ritalin, topped the weekend box office with $77.6 million, bringing its five-day opening gross to $113.3 million. Still, War couldn't shake the industry's 19-week slump; the top 12 releases were down 25 percent from a year ago, when Spider-Man 2 debuted with a record $118.1 million. Rounding out the weekend's Top 5: Batman Begins, with $18.7 million, Mr. & Mrs. Smith ($12.7 million), Bewitched ($10.8 million) and Herbie: Fully Loaded ($10.5 million).
