The show documents the ever-changing relationship among the three women. Twenty years have passed since their song "Hold On" became a worldwide hit, and Wilson Phillips is reuniting to go on tour and record a comeback album of cover songs originally written and sung by their famous musician parents -- Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys and John and Michelle Phillips of the Mamas & the Papas.
But it isn't all California dreamin', says Chynna, specifically referring to a blow-out fight the three had when discussing a set list for an upcoming concert. "It's hard to draw the line," she says. "On one hand, you're thinking, I just want this to be as real as possible, and I want to share my true feelings, but then on the other hand, you're like, Oh my gosh, I probably spoke out of line." Wendy says of the incident, "I was attacked, pretty much... but I think that when the cameras are rolling, it makes people do things they normally wouldn't do."
On the first episode, Carnie also undergoes a second weight-loss surgery — and the cameras follow her through her painful recovery. The 43-year-old never hesitated about sharing the experience with viewers. "I just said, 'This is what's happening in my life, and I'm not going to hide anything.' I wanted it to be real," she says. "It's what I'm going through. It's what a lot of people need to see because they've trusted me to be open with them. It's like a responsibility for me."
Carnie's sister Wendy, on the other hand, says she was the most uneasy about signing on to the show. "I was forced!" she jokes. "I was curious, but I was also very scared. You see reality shows and they get very raunchy and distasteful... but you realize that once you start shooting, they can only use what you give them. So you have more power than you think."
Carnie says the experience has been everything they've expected. "It's not easy. It can be fun and it can be stressful," she says. "Just pray for a good message — and good editing."Wilson Phillips: Still Holding On premieres Sunday, April 8 at 9/8c on the TV Guide Network.
