An extraordinarily awkward moment happened during the Academy Awards ceremony when, right after a sketch about the difficulties of being black in Hollywood, host Chris Rock introduced the "director of our new minority outreach program" Stacey Dash.

"I cannot wait to help my people out," Dash said. "Happy Black History Month!" and then walked offstage.

This was a very bizarre, almost nonsensical joke, because Dash is a black woman who wants to end Black History Month.

Stacey Dash was an actress who was in Clueless, but she's mostly known these days for being a conservative Fox News pundit. In January, while responding to Spike Lee and Jada Pinkett Smith's Oscars boycotts, Dash dismissed criticisms of structural racism in Hollywood and called for the end of Black History Month and BET, calling them "ludicrous."

Stacy Dash says "BET lies to black people"

"We have to make up our minds. Either we want to have segregation or integration, and if we don't want segregation, then we have to get rid of channels like BET and the BET Awards and the Image Awards, where you're only awarded if you're black," Dash said. "If it were the other way around, we would be up in arms. It's a double standard."

She later wrote a blog post on Patheos.com explaining how she thinks the #OscarsSoWhite controversy is "lame, because black people should not demand that every segment of society who watches movies be reflected in the number of Oscars given to actors and actresses. That's just not how the world works."

Moments after she appeared on stage, she published another blog post on Patheos.com, explaining who she is and why this happened. She was added to "bring diversity" because her point of view isn't a "cookie-cutter black" viewpoint. She's a "free thinker" who goes against other black people, and so her presence represented real diversity.

What did you think of Dash's surprise appearance?
