President Barack Obama may have failed to bring the 2016 Summer Olympics to Chicago, but the White House doesn't have any regrets — and lashed out this week at Fox News and Glenn Beck for criticizing the president's efforts.
On the official White House blog, Jesse Lee, the online programs director, wrote that the cable news channel "continued its disregard for the facts in an attempt to smear the administration's efforts to win the Olympics for the United States."
"In the past, hosting the Olympics has been a source of pride and unity for the country, but once again Fox News' Glenn Beck program has shown that nothing is worthy of respect if it can be used as part of a partisan attack to boost ratings," Lee wrote.
The White House blog chides Glenn Beck for mangling facts:
-- Beck said, "Vancouver lost, how much was it? They lost a billion dollars when they had the Olympics." But Vancouver won't host the Olympics until next year.
-- One of Beck's guests said that Chicago is trying to host the Olympics when the city government is closing "several days a week" because it's broke. In truth, according to the White House, the city had just one "reduced-service" day so far this year and plans just two others.
The White House blog failed to note, however, a Vancouver Sun report in January that said the city could see its credit rating reduced because of Olympic construction costs. It reported that Vancouver could be on the hook for up to $850 million and may have to borrow a large part of that to shore up the project's finance. The Olympics have been money-losing ventures for other cities, too.
Of course, it's all moot now that Chicago has been eliminated, and the 2016 Games will be hosted by Rio de Janiero.
An e-mail seeking comment from Fox News Channel went unreturned.
What do you think? Is the blog stoking the partisan bickering that Obama says he wants to see end? Or should the White House call out Fox and Beck?
