The Walking Dead, SpongeBob SquarePants and Grimm Join Free Comic Book Day

Who doesn't love free stuff? Comic book fans — and those who'd like to be — can pick up free samples on Saturday during the 12th annual Free Comic Book Day. The event, which will be hosted at over 2,000 comic book shops across the country, features dozens of special limited editions including Superman, Star Wars, Archie and The Smurfs. More than four and a half million copies are expected to be distributed during the day, which aims to introduce newcomers to the genre.

Among the titles based on TV shows are Image Comics' The Walking Dead (which, of course, started as a comic before becoming a breakout hit on AMC), DC Comics' DC Nation Sampler (featuring the Cartoon Network series Beware the Batman and Teen Titans Go!); Bongo Comics Free For All (including characters from The Simpsons); Marvel's Avengers Assemble/Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H.;and books based on SpongeBob SquarePants, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Sesame Street. There will also be a preview edition of Dynamite Entertainment's upcoming adaptation of NBC's Grimm, which launches on May 8.
