The Walking Dead

After several harrowing months on the run, Rick and his rag-tag group of warriors will go on the offensive in Sunday's midseason finale of The Walking Dead.

Upon learning from their new ally Michonne (Danai Gurira) that Glenn (Steven Yeun) and Maggie (Lauren Cohan) have been kidnapped, Rick (Andrew Lincoln), Daryl (Norman Reedus) and Oscar (Vincent Ward) have gone directly to Woodbury to get their people back. But will they be able to match the forces of Woodbury?

Is speed the new suspense on TV?

"We know that Rick and Daryl took that prison," showrunner Glen Mazzara explains. "They know how to lead an assault [against walkers]. Now they're going up against humans, innocent unsuspecting people, so it's going to be very, very interesting. We know what fighters Rick, Daryl and Michonne are." The question remains though whether Michonne will actually be useful to them during the assault. Not only does she lack that built-in loyalty to their group, but she also has her own agenda: killing Woodbury's sadistic leader, the Governor (David Morrissey).

What Rick & Co. don't know, however, is that Maggie and Glenn aren't the only group members within the walls of Woodbury since Andrea (Laurie Holden) has made the town her home, particularly in the Governor's bed. So whose side will she be on when push comes to shove? "Andrea has no idea who's knocking at the door," Mazzara tells us. "She has no idea that the Governor has any secrets, and that veil is going to be lifted in a huge way, and she's going to be very, very shocked when she's confronted with the true reality of the choices that she's made."

The Walking Dead: Will the Governor take the prison?

Daryl will also be faced with possibility of confronting his long-lost (or so he thought) brother Merle (Michael Rooker) in the midseason finale. Though Mazzara remained coy on when that will actually happen, he notes, "I guarantee it'll be in a way that the audience never anticipates."

Do you think Rick and the group can survive the assault on Woodbury? Maybe the rumored midseason finale introduction of Tyrese (Chad Coleman) could be their saving grace? Hit the comments!

The Walking Dead airs Sundays at 9/8c on AMC.
