The Walking Deadaxed yet another character this week, bringing the Season 3 death toll to new heights. But who fell victim in Sunday's episode was somewhat surprising — especially considering Rick (Andrew Lincoln) seemed ready to turn Michonne (Danai Gurira) over to The Governor (David Morissey).

With the deadline for the peace treaty approaching, Rick began to waver about whether he should turn Michonne over to The Governor and even enlisted Merle (Michael Rooker) to do his dirty work for him. Ultimately, Rick decides against it, but Merle had already put his plan into action, leading Michonne away from the group and knocking her out cold before forcing her to walk back to Woodbury.

The Walking Dead: Who's going to die before Season 3 ends?

Eventually, Michonne got under Merle's skin, telling him this is his chance for redemption. He finally untied Michonne and told her to head back to the prison and prepare for the onslaught. Merle, however, set his sights on killing The Governor. He led a horde of walkers to the meeting place and picked off The Governor's men. Unfortunately, once The Governor discovered Merle, he bit off two of his fingers before shooting him. Worse, The Governor didn't shoot him in the head, but instead left him to turn into a walker, which forced a tearful Daryl (Norman Reedus) to put his own brother down. Buh-Bye Merle.

But there was a bright spot during the episode: Glenn (Steve Yeun) asked Hershel (Scott Wilson) if he could marry Maggie (Lauren Cohan). But if horror genre tradition holds, this now makes us worry that Glenn will find his ultimate happiness only to die shortly thereafter. Still, his quiet proposal was sweet, even if he used a ring he found on a walker.

The Walking Dead: What does this mean for Andrea?!

But the couple's bliss is short-lived as Rick then admits the truth about Michonne to the group. He goes on to say this is no longer a Ricktatorship. Everyone has helped the group survive, so everyone should get a say. It's no longer up to him whether they stay and fight or flee because he's not going to follow in the footsteps of The Governor.

Do you think the group will decide to leave the prison? Who else do you think will die in next week's season finale? Hit the comments!

The Walking Dead airs Sundays at 9/8c on AMC.
