Wagon Train Actor Robert Horton Dies at 91
The actor and singer was best known for playing Flint McCullough on the Western series
Robert Horton, the actor and singer best known for his portrayal of scout Flint McCullough on the popular Western series Wagon Train, died Wednesday, March 9, The New York Times reports. He was 91.
The square-jawed actor played the heartthrob McCullough on Wagon Train (which was the top-rated series in 1961) from the show's premiere in 1957 until it moved from NBC to ABC in 1962. In 1965, Horton returned to the small screen as the star of A Man Called Shenandoah, for which he also sang the theme song, his most popular recording.
He also acted onstage, appearing in the Broadway musical 110 in the Shade. In his parallel career as a singer, he recorded albums and performed at the London Palladium.
Horton was born in Los Angeles on July 29, 1924. He enlisted in the Coast Guard in 1943, but was medically discharged soon after due to an enlarged kidney. He began his acting career in 1945, and struggled until he landed his part on Wagon Train. He took his job seriously, and did most of his own horseback riding on the show.
He is survived by his wife Marilynn.
