VIDEO: Kathie Lee Gifford Is "a Wreck" After Dropping a Puppy on Today

The Today show truly went to the dogs on Thursday, when co-host Kathie Lee Gifford dropped a puppy during a pet adoption segment in the show's fourth hour. "Oh, puppy needs a bath-y," Gifford quipped, as she held a squirming brown pup, which then promptly went hurtling headfirst into a playpen. A clearly mortified Gifford immediately picked the dog back up and cradled it, repeating, "I'm sorry, I'm sorry," as her co-host, Hoda Kotb, covered her mouth in a combination of amusement and horror. "Puppy took a nosedive-y," Kotb said. (Don't worry, the puppy is fine.)

On Friday, Gifford and Kotb called in to an earlier hour of Today, and Gifford told Matt Lauer that she was "a wreck" after the incident.

"Kathie Lee, have you gotten over this yet?" Lauer asked.

"The puppy's OK, but I'm a wreck," Gifford responded. "It's very upsetting for me. I have three dogs of my own and I adore dogs."

Gifford presented her own theory of why the pup wiggled out of her arms. "The problem is that that dog didn't want to go home with Hoda," she said. "He knows Hoda's looking to adopt a dog, and he knows what her apartment's like, and there's no way."

"I'm on the phone," Kotb interjected. "I was terrified for that dog when it took that kamikaze dive away from Kathie Lee. She also claims it was because he smelled funny, which I'll attest to. He really did. It wasn't great."
