Chen recalled working as a local news reporter in Dayton, Ohio when she was told she'd never be on the anchor desk because she's Chinese. Chen, who was 25 at the time, says her news director pointed out that Dayton didn't have a big Asian community. "'On top of that, because of your heritage, because of your Asian eyes, I've noticed that when you're on camera, when you're interviewing someone, you look disinterested and bored because your eyes are so heavy, they are so small,'" she said the news director told her.
"It felt like a dagger in my heart," Chen said on Wednesday's show. "It was racism." After an agent told her to get plastic surgery, she complied. "Now, it's like sometimes I wonder — but I will say after I had that done everything ... the ball did roll for me. I struggle with, 'Wow, did I give in to the man in doing this?'"
