"Of course it worked, I'm Katherine Pierce."
In true Vampire Diaries fashion, the milestone 100th episode ended with a huge twist. Just moments away from death, Katherine (Nina Dobrev) decided to use the Travellers' spell on her doppelganger Elena allowing her to live another day.
"Katherine is one crafty little beyotch," executive producer Julie Plec tells TVGuide.com. "She's not going to let anything happen that will compromise her identity so we'll see how long she succeeds at being able to do that, but my money is on Katherine. She is notoriously pretty good at being Elena Gilbert."
The hour also served as a tribute for fans, and brought back some of the series' favorite fallen characters like Vicki (Kayla Ewell), Alaric (Mathew Davis), and Aunt Jenna (Sara Canning) among others. In one of the show'ssexier scenes, Klaus (Joseph Morgan) returned from New Orleans where he and Caroline (Candice Accola) finally gave in to their hot sexual tension. But was the hookup just a one-time thing? Will Caroline and Tyler (Michael Trevino) rekindle their relationship now that he's back? And what about the future of Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Elena? Plec dissects the episode's burning questions and more.
You've hit 100 episodes! What does it mean to you to reach this milestone?
Julie Plec: It means we survived. It means we a have a reason to be as proud as we are. It means we did something right and that people who love the show loved it so vividly it allowed it to stick around. So it's all positive.
Talk about the big scene where you brought back all those old characters.
Plec: It was great. We carved out an entire day to shoot that one scene and it was a Thursday before the last day of shooting which was Friday and then the big party was Saturday so it was like the beginning of the party. It was also the first and only scene where all of those people had been in the same room together and shot at the same time. The [unit production manager] told me when they set up for rehearsal the whole crew stopped their work to watch because they felt like it was a really big deal and it was.
Was there anything in the episode you had to cut for time?
Plec: Actually, thank God, this episode we were actually able to get away with [almost everything]. There were some fun lines and extra little beats we had to lose, but when all was said and done we were able to keep the story complete.
So how long will Katherine prolong her inevitable death by being inside Elena's body?
Plec: Well I can't say how long, but I can say that Katherine is one crafty little beyotch so she's not going to let anything happen that will compromise her identity. So we'll see how long she succeeds at being able to do that, but my money is on Katherine. She is notoriously pretty good at being Elena Gilbert.
Talk about the decision to show Katherine's real first meeting with Stefan (Paul Wesley).
Plec: It was two-fold. It was one way for Katherine to throw a little dig in at Damon [saying] in the question of who I love more, guess who? And the other was to dig at him to say, "Hey listen, this doppelganger prophecy sounds ridiculous. I mean, who believes in the universe bringing two people together? And yet, I was minding my own business when who did I see? Stefan Salvatore and it changed the entire course of my life."
Damon seems like he could be heading towards a downward spiral.
Plec: Yes and no. He ends this episode with a very clear goal, which is I'm going to get my girl back, but unfortunately his girl has been hijacked. So that's going to be an interesting development for him as he works hard to get the relationship back on track. There is also this beautiful new addition in our world in the form of Enzo (Michael Malarkey) so the good thing is that whatever Damon is going through he's not alone. He can't shake Enzo whether he wants to or not.
Damon and Stefan shared a great scene together. Will we have more of that soon?
Plec: The show is driven by the power of the relationship between those brothers; it's the meat and potatoes of the show. At the end of the day, these two brothers have fought and hated each other and have come back to each other over and over again and it's the most powerful element of the show so there will always be that connection. But [right now] clingy, manipulative and wonderful Enzo might get in the way of that.
Katherine and Stefan got really close in the last episodes. Now that she's alive, will that continue?
Plec: Well if there is one thing Katherine has made clear, it's that she wants Stefan Salvatore and she tends to get what she wants. So we'll see if he is able to figure out what she's up to in time.
Caroline and Klaus finally hooked up. Was this something you always planned for once he was moving to The Originals and was it a one-time thing done for the fans?
Plec: Well, you say done for the fans, but you still get 7 million hate tweets so I wouldn't say that. But I do think it's closure and that extra step in their journey that we were not able to see before Klaus went off. Now they made a promise to each other that it's one time only and that he would be forever gone and presumably he'll live up to that promise. So for now it's definitely the end of the journey they're having together and we'd dare not be so foolish to say anymore.
What about Caroline and Tyler now that he also came back to Mystic Falls?
Plec: Well it is a reconnection of these two who have so many feelings for each other and so much history. She's been so angry with him for leaving her repeatedly and, ultimately, I think now the tables have turned a little bit because he might have a reason to be angry with her if he finds out what she did.
Finally, what would you say is the theme of the next chapter?
Plec: The next chapter is how much damage can Katherine do and what are the repercussions of the events of Episode 100? Then past that towards the end, we'll start to understand how the doppelganger prophecy as believed by the Travellers [works], what it means for the remaining doppelgangers and we'll be unraveling the mysteries of the Travellers and how it's going to impact our heroes and the rest of Mystic Falls.
