[WARNING: The following contains spoilers from Thursday night's episode. Read at your own risk!]
Even though The Vampire Diaries has spent a lot of time focused on finding the cure, the outcome of that story that was reached in this episode is hardly the first thing on our minds.
That's because Tyler has been run out of town(!), Jeremy appears to be dead(!!) and Katherine (!!!) swooped in at the last moment, cure in hand, leaving us to wonder how long she'll be around. So how did we get here? Keep reading for more.
"I've seen the Da Vinci Code" —Caroline
Despite having almost been killed by Klaus, Caroline reluctantly needs his help to decipher the cryptex on the Hunter's Sword which will reveal the cure's location. Aramaic, of course, is the extinct language on the sword, which Klaus conveniently understands. But it's what Klaus reads that changes the game: There's just one dose of this long-awaited cure. Before Caroline and Tyler are made aware of this, the trio calls up Rebekah and Klaus quickly drops the bomb so that she can be the first — and only — one to get it.
"Until we find a way." — Tyler
With Kol dead and the spell on Klaus about to wear off, Klaus has nothing left to lose and nothing holding him back from killing Tyler. Caroline attempts to use her hold over Klaus and pleads, "I'm not asking you to forgive him. All I'm asking is that you let him live somewhere far away. You know how much I love Tyler ... show him the mercy that I would show you." So Klaus says he'll give Tyler a head start before coming after him, which means Caroline must say her goodbyes soon. "How many times are we going to say goodbye?" Caroline asks, with tears streaming down her face. "This isn't goodbye," Tyler says. Tear.
"You betrayed me. How does it feel?" — Bonnie
Bonnie, Jeremy and Shane reach the caves where they find the entrance to Silus' tomb. In order for it to open, Bonnie must use her expression magic with her hands on Jeremy's chest. As the rumbles begin and the rocks start to fall, the entrance opens in front of them. Jeremy and Bonnie begin to walk in, while Shane is whimpering with a broken leg. "Give me a hand," he says. "You need help?" Bonnie asks. "I needed help, but you betrayed me." Then, then Bonnie and Jeremy leave him behind and continue on their path.
"How is that supposed to cure every vampire in the world?" —Jeremy
When Jeremy and Bonnie reach Silus' tomb, Jeremy attempts to pull the fossilized dose of the cure from Silus' arms without bringing him back to life. But in the process Vaughn appears, stabs Bonnie and races to raise Silus so he can then kill him. A battle ensues until Elena comes and saves the day. But when Elena wants to leave a wounded Bonnie to grab the cure, Jeremy knows something's not right: It's Katherine! She uses Jeremy to help unlock the cure, but as it comes free she takes off with it. At that moment Silus awakens and breaks Jeremy's neck.
So, is Jeremy really dead? When will we see Tyler again? And what does Katherine having the cure mean for our Mystic Falls heroes? Share you theories, comments and condolences below.
