Get ready for a whole new way to feed your Salvatore addiction, folks! Starting Thursday, DC Comics will begin releasing chapters of a digital comic based on The Vampire Diaries. "The first issue is going into the mythology behind vervain," previews Colleen Doran, who's writing the tales on an alternating schedule with fellow comic-book contributor B. Clay Moore. "I've always wondered how they got all of the vervain out of Mystic Falls...it's a really common plant, what happened? Since there's never been an explanation, I came up with one."
Both Doran and Moore are confessed fans of the show, which means they are committed to honoring the current TVD plots. In fact, a bulk of their ideas are aimed at filling in the blanks. "We're mostly looking at what Damon and Stefan may have been up to at different times during their 2000 years of existence," says Moore. "The second story, which is mine, is set directly before the show started."
The first chapter just so happens to feature Doran's favorite character to write and watch. "I started watching the show because of Ian Somerhalder," she admits with a laugh, adding that it was the dreamboat's resemblance to DC Comics character Nightwing that originally caught her fancy. "It was all about art! What a sacrifice, right?"
"Damon is fun," agrees Moore, "but the first story I have written is with Alaric, who I was really sorry to see leave the show. He was one of my favorite characters. I would like to write something for Jeremy, too."
Thankfully, this new format for more TVD stories also means more freedom. "Nobody has rejected anything that we have turned in so far," raves Doran of DC and Warner Bros. open-minded approach to the comics. "I think they're just looking for stories that work and fit their continuity. We've been given a lot of free reign to go in different places in these stories."
