The Vampire Diaries' Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley Look Back on 100 Episodes

Death, love, heartbreak, flashbacks, body switches, resurrections — a lot has happened in 100 episodes of The Vampire Diaries. When the CW series premiered in September 2009, viewers were introduced to protagonist Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev), a journal-writing high school teen who had just lost her parents. Soon she fell for Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley), who she thought was the brooding new guy in school. In reality, he was a century-old vampire captivated by her, a girl who looked exactly like his one-time love, Katherine Pierce (Dobrev), who is also a vampire. Stefan had also just returned from his hometown of Mystic Falls where he reunited with his brother Damon (Ian Somerhalder) after spending decades away. Check out Part 1 with the Salvatore Brothers.

FAVORITE EPISODE

Season 1, Episode 6, "Lost Girls"

Somerhalder:  It's when Damon turns Vicki and they dance around in their underwear.

Season 3, Episode 3, "The End of the Affair"
Wesley:
When we flashed back to the 1920s and Stefan was "The Ripper."

Watch the cast of The Vampire Diaries plays "Shag, Marry, Stake"

FAVORITE KILL

Season 1, Episode 6, "Lost Girls"
Somerhalder:
Wow there are so many of them, but Vicki, when they're dancing, and he says, "I know what's best for you" and then he breaks her neck and she crumbles and he says, "Death" and he just steps over her and walks away.

Season 3, Episode 1, "The Birthday"
Wesley:
It was pretty awesome when he ripped those girls' heads off and left them on the couch. That was pretty exciting [and] really good for us to show to young kids.

SADDEST DEATH

Season 3, Episode 22, "The Departed"
Somerhalder:
Alaric (Matt Davis)... Alaric damn near killed him, and losing him was awful. He was his wingman, drinking buddy -- I'm sure they occasionally made out.

Season 2, Episode 21, "The Sun Also Rises"
Wesley:
Aunt Jenna (Sara Canning) because she was a series regular, so that was a tough one.

Returning Shows: Where we left off

FAVORITE FLASHBACK ERA

1864
Somerhalder:
I kind of got [cheated] out of the '20s, I would've loved that, but 1864 when Stefan and Damon were running around playing football just being young and happy and full of vitality and life it was good.

1864
Wesley:
I really liked the '20s, but I also like the Civil War time. I thought that was really cool.
