TVLand Pulls The Dukes of Hazzard Amidst Confederate Flag Controversy

Bad news for the good ol' boys. TVLand has pulled episodes ofThe Dukes of Hazzard from its schedule, People reports.

Though the network hasn't commented on its reasoning for dropping the series, the popular assumption stems from controversy over the Confederate flag, which is painted prominently on the roof of the Duke brothers' Dodge Charger, the General Lee (You know, named after Confederate General Robert E. Lee).

Following June 17's racially motivated shootings at Emanuel AME Church in South Carolina and the subsequent demands to remove the flag from the state's capitol building, national retailers including Amazon and Walmart have made similar moves, pulling Confederate flag-related merchandise.

Last week, actor Ben Jones, who played Cooter on The Dukes of Hazzard, took to Facebook, defending the show's use of the flag.

"I think all of Hazzard Nation understands that the Confederate battle flag is the symbol that represents the indomitable spirit of independence which keeps us 'makin' our way the only way we know how,'" he wrote. "That flag on top of the General Lee made a statement that the values of the rural South were the values of courage and family and good times."

Jones wrote that "in Hazzard County there was never any racism."
