On the forthcoming Taboo, an FX/BBC One miniseries based on the board game, Tom Hardy plays against type as a mild-mannered man who can't say the words he needs to get people to help him save his family, and time is running out.

Just kidding, he plays a badass from the 1800s everyone thought was dead who comes back to London from Africa and takes over his father's corrupt shipping empire. It's pure Tom Hardy. He even co-wrote the story with his father Chips. It's like The Revenant, the movie for which he's nominated for an Oscar, if Leonardo DiCaprio made it home and Tom Hardy wanted tea instead of pelts.

The Revenant tops 2016 Oscar nominations

Taboo is the third time Hardy has worked with series creator Steven Knight, after Peaky Blinders and the film Locke. It's executive-produced by Hardy and fellow 2016 Oscar nominee Ridley Scott, and also stars Jonathan Pryce and Oona Chaplin from Game of Thrones.

The eight-part miniseries is currently in production and is scheduled to air in 2017. FX released the first trailer on Thursday. Check it out:
