Tom Bosley Is Back in Charlie & Me
Tom Bosley, Charlie & Me
Call him Mr. C, Father Dowling or Sheriff Tupper — Tom Bosley
, 80, answers to them all. The veteran character actor celebrates his 60th year in showbiz with Hallmark's Charlie & Me
(Saturday at 9 pm/ET). The Tony winner plays a jazz-loving grandfather whose own heart attack works to repair the broken hearts around him.
TV Guide: What drew you to this?
Tom Bosley: They actually hired me before I read it and fell in love with it. I turned to my wife [actress Patty] and said, "This is me, today." I felt that I was at the same stage in my life that Charlie's in. It was a perfect role for me. I love that kind of jazz [in the film], not today's jazz.
TV Guide: We have to ask you: Do you keep in touch with any of your Happy Days castmates?
Bosley: I talk to Marion Ross [Mrs. C] often; she lives nearby. But it's been a while since I've spoken to anyone else.
TV Guide: Will there ever be another Happy Days reunion?
Bosley: I don't think so, dear. The first one was too soon, the second was fun, and we really were a second family.... But we're all off pursuing our own things now.
TV Guide: How do you choose your roles?
Bosley: I'm now doing roles suitable for my age. When you start out and you don't look like Paul Newman, you play older — with mustaches, face paint. Then, eventually, you're no longer the father or husband — you're the grandfather. And that fits in with my life now.
TV Guide: Is there a role you've always wanted to play?
Bosley: [Laughs] Yes, Macbeth!
TV Guide: You have such energy! Do you think you'll ever retire?
Bosley: That's up to God, and my wife — when she tells me I'm no longer allowed to drive!
