While there are plenty of questions remaining from the end of Timeless' first season, the biggest question on fans' minds is when it will be back.
Expect an answer very soon, says creator Shawn Ryan. Like, really soon. TV Guide spoke to Ryan at the Television Critics Association winter press tour to get some details.
"I have a feeling that NBC — when's their [TCA] session? In the next couple days? I have a feeling they will be making an announcement very shortly," said Ryan. "They've kind of informed us of a general window, and I don't want to step on that especially because it's not final, but my guess is you'll find out very shortly."
Timeless Season 2 was originally scheduled for a spring or summer return, but Ryan's words that an announcement is coming soon — NBC's TCA session is scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 9 — means we're probably looking at a spring date. NBC likely won't be announcing summer premiere dates until later this year, but is likely to announce its spring schedule in the coming weeks (or as Ryan hinted at, coming days).
Timeless was famously canceled by NBC and then uncanceled after Sony Pictures Television negotiated a deal with the network to bring it back for a second season. But will that near-death experience affect how the show will end this season? Nope.
"Season 2 is matching up very closely to what [creator] Eric [Kripke] and I pitched last March when we were pitching a Season 2," Ryan tells TV Guide. "So no, I don't think there was any ever creative issues NBC had with the shows, they love the show. There will be some key differences this season to last season, but those are wholly out of Eric and my desire to shake things up a bit and not out of any network or any studio directive to change things."
As for some of the time periods that the crew will visit, Ryan isn't saying much, but someone close to him says they'll be very cool. "They want us to keep that secret, I think we sent out a tweet once where people were able to see a script cover and they were able to figure out one, and we got reprimanded for that," Ryan tells us with a laugh. "But I will say that, my daughter, who is a huge fan of the show, I've spoiled to her a couple of the time periods, and each time she goes, 'Oooh!' I think fans will dig it. We've seen two episodes now cut, it's the show our fans love."
Timeless is expected to return later this year.
