Swallow This: ABC Cancels The Chew

The Chew got some tough news today. After seven seasons, the mid-morning ABC talk show will come to an end.

ABC announced on Wednesday that The Chew will continue production through the season and officially wrap in September to make room for a third hour of Good Morning America. Michael Symon, Carla Hall and Clinton Kelly currently host the food/talk show hybrid that will have racked up over 1,500 episodes before it officially bows in the fall.

The show's creator Gordon Elliott said the show changed the landscape of daytime TV in his goodbye memo to the staff and crew.

"Before The Chew, no one had attempted a talk/foodhybrid. Our hosts Clinton, Carla and Michael and the staff created television history executing the show as well as they did for all these years," he said in the statement. "I know I speak for all of the people who work on the show when I say it was the best television we have ever had the privilege to produce."

As for the third hour of GMA, it will air at 1 p.m. ET and feature more pop culture, entertainment and live event news as it expands from the 9 a.m. time slot. It makes sense that ABC would lean into more GMA. It's been America's most-watched morning newscast for six years running and has taken home two consecutive Daytime Emmy Awards for Best Morning Program.

The network will announce the anchors and official title for the third hour "in the coming months."
