Taylor Swift Saves the Day! Apple Will Now Pay Musicians During Free Trial

Taylor Swift: award-winning performer, fashion icon, cat lover and now a hero to all in the music industry.

Over the weekend, Swift posted an open letter to Apple explaining that she won't allow her new album, 1989, to stream on Apple Music because the company was refusing to pay any royalties to songwriters, producers and performers during the free three-month trial it's offering to new users. It took less than a day for Apple to change course, with Eddy Cue, the senior vice president of Internet services and software, tweeting the update late Sunday.

"We had originally negotiated these deals based on paying them a higher royalty rate on an ongoing basis to compensate for this brief time. But when I woke up this morning and saw what Taylor had written, it really solidified that we needed to make a change," Cue told Billboard. "And so that's why we decided we will now pay artists during the trial period and we'll also keep the royalty rate at the higher rate."

Cue said he in fact spoke to T. Swift, who was very happy about the decision. "I let her know that we heard her concerns and are making the changes," he said. "She was thrilled and very thankful. You can tell by the letter she wrote that she's a great admirer of Apple and we've done a lot of great work together. So she was really excited to see how quickly we responded and thrilled that we did."

Swift tweeted Sunday that she was "elated" and "relieved" at the news.
