Taye Diggs is warming up his vocal chords for a "pivotal, musical role" on NCIS' 300th episode, CBS announced on Monday.

Diggs will play Marine Gunnery Sergeant Aaron Davis, a special operations sniper who was gravely injured and suffers extreme post traumatic stress after an ambush attack in Iraq. The team will meet him as he recovers in Walter Reed Medical Center as he faces a "slow, but effective rehab that includes a cutting-edge music therapy program."

Gibbs (Mark Harmon) will need to question Davis about the ambush in order to solve a new murder case, but first must pull the wounded soldier - once a free spirited musician - out of the shell of Davis' former self.

"For our 300th episode we needed a guest actor who could proudly portray one of our nation's wounded warriors as well as participate in a very touching musical performance," showrunner Gary Glasberg said in a statement. "This emotionally charged role is tailor-made for Taye Diggs and we are so thrilled and honored to have him join us."

For those that only know Diggs from his screen work, the veteran actor landed his first Broadway musical, Carousel, in 1994. He went on to originate the role of Benjamin Coffin III in Rent and most recently wrapped a starring stint of Hedwig and the Angry Inch last summer.

Diggs' NCIS episode airs March 15 on CBS.
