The entrepreneur who launched both the Tennis Channel and the Ski Channel is now heading to the beach. TV action sports mogul Steve Bellamy has announced plans to launch The Surf Channel, which will launch next month in 20 million U.S. TV households.
"Surf, its lifestyle and environment, create an unparalleled canvas for a television network," Bellamy says. "The Surf Channel will be a sports channel, travel channel and lifestyle channel all in one. Viewers will go on the most expensive vacation of their lives to the most remote and exotic destinations the planet has to offer. They will get to see some of the most incredible athletes pushing the human spirit and the boundaries of human capability to its furthest limits."
The video-on-demand channel says it has secured partnerships with DirecTV, Dish Network, Comcast and Cox Communications, among others.
The Surf Channel will launch in mid-September with a screening of The Endless Summer, considered the best-known surfing film of all time. "Giving tens of millions of people in their living room access to the sport and culture of surfing is something we have never had before," says filmmaker Bruce Brown.
The Surf Channel will operate as a sister to the Ski Channel. Surf Channel programming will also appear on YouTube.
