Supergirl: From Superman to Project Cadmus, Here's Everything You Need to Know About Season 2

After one season on CBS, Supergirl's sophomore season flies on to The CW's schedule Monday to become the network's fourth series about incredibly pretty people saving the world from other equally pretty folks who are a bit more evil.

In the Season 2 premiere, the Melissa Benoist-fronted series will introduce its version of the Man of Steel, played by Teen Wolf's Tyler Hoechlin. But Superman's handsome visage isn't the only new addition to the show this season. In fact, there are several new faces and even some big changes coming to the series in its first season on The CW, a move that executive producer Ali Adler describes as being incredibly positive.

"At The CW we really have an opportunity to be part of this amazing fabric of these other superhero shows. It just sort of feels like home amongst the [Greg] Berlanti universe," Adler tells TVGuide.com. "We get to be specific about aliens in ways that are so appreciated at The CW, and I think we get to incorporate all our tremendous visual effects and stunts and action sequences and the romance. All of it is tremendous wish fulfillment from this network that has been so supportive to superheroes."

So what's next from said superheroes? Keep reading to find out what to expect from Supergirl Season 2.

He's the 'Man: Tyler Hoechlin's Superman will appear in the first two episodes of the season, arriving to assist Kara in preventing a major catastrophe. He'll stick around, though, to pick his cousin's brain about their home planet. However, not everyone at the DEO will be happy to see him.

Who's the boss? When Supergirl moved from CBS to The CW, production for the series was relocated to Vancouver, where the rest of the network's DC Comics series are filmed. Unfortunately, the move means that series standout Calista Flockhart, who plays Cat Grant, Kara's mentor and former boss, will only be a recurring guest star in Season 2. Although no one can replace Cat -- both on the show and in viewers' hearts -- the series has to fill the void somehow, and that means introducing Ian Gomez as DC Comics character Snapper Carr.

"He comes in and is very much a foil for Kara Danvers in the workplace," says Adler. "A lot of this season is her finding her feet at CatCo without Cat. So we've worked that into the plot, and he's going to help her learn some important lessons at the office and who she is as a professional woman."

Aliens are people too: Although we still don't know too much about what the mysterious Project Cadmus' ultimate goal is, we do know that the organization is this season's big bad. We also know it's a group dedicated to fighting alien threats -- and that the folks in charge are holding Jeremiah Danvers (Dean Cain) as prisoner. All of this will come into play after President Marsdin, played by Wonder Woman Lynda Carter, signs the Alien Amnesty Act this season. But what does that mean?

Adler explains: "[The Alien Amnesty Act] is this act that gives equality to aliens on Earth and so many -- not only people but also aliens -- have their reactions [to it]. And it very much mirrors the current political and social crisis that we have going on in the United States and on Earth today. So it's very much based on this emotional preconceived idea of who we think people are and who we think aliens are. And that leads to Cadmus."

Interesting... very interesting.

New faces: Supergirl is introducing a number of new characters this season, including Lena Luthor (Merlin's Katie McGrath), the younger sister of Superman villain Lex. But just because she's a Luthor, doesn't automatically make her untrustworthy. "That goes back to that preconceived ideas of aliens or people," says Adler. "I think if you have the name Luthor and you're in a Superman or Supergirl show, then you know to suspect that person. But it really is about taking people or aliens at face value and seeing who they are individually. We'll absolutely tackle that question."

The CW's four-way DC crossover has found its big bad

Elsewhere, Chris Woods (The Vampire Diaries, Containment) will be taking on the role of Mon-El. His arrival in the pod that crashed to Earth in the Season 1 finale will allow Kara to pay it forward, as it were. "When Kara Zor-El landed on Earth and she was sort of a fish out of water ... she was completely out of sorts on Earth," says Adler. "What's amazing about Mon-El, is that Kara gets to play the voice of experience to the person who has come to Earth and really has no sense of what's going on and what is a socio or cultural or any kind of reference. So she provides the guidance and experience that she once received."

The series is also introducing out DC Comics character Maggie Sawyer, who is played by Floriana Lima. In the comics, Maggie is a detective with the Science Police, and she'll be occupying the same role here.

'Shippers beware: At the end of the first season, Kara and James (Mehcad Brooks) finally locked lips for real. The good news is that 'shippers won't have to wait too long to see what happens next. "We're going to see where that romance leads us at the top of the season," says Adler. "We're coming back in real time, exactly where we left off last year and we will see them immediately afterward." The bad news is, as TVGuide.com previously reported, that may not lead to a happy ending, as Kara's priorities shift to focus on her career.

Supergirl's second season premieres Monday, Oct. 10 at 8/7c on The CW.
