"I really wanted to create a lot of loose threads so that there was no way they couldn't pick us up for Season 2," Kapnek told reporters at a special preview screening of the finale. "The main goal ... was really just to stir the pot. It was about finding a way to create all these great natural cliff-hangers with the stuff that we've had bubbling throughout the season and not fully losing the comedy. ... [ABC needed to be] dying to know what happens next."
Rest assured, all you weird George and Tessa shippers, ABC indeed picked up the freshman comedy for a second season. But before we get there, there's still Wednesday's finale (8:30/7:30c, ABC) to deal with. The episode, aptly titled "The Motherload" features a cameo by Sheila Shay's favorite soul singer, James Ingram, and a hilarious Mother's Day 5K. "We get a glimpse into the town craziness and how various people celebrate Mother's Day," Kapnek says.
Watch this sampling of the town's over-the-top festivities:
But it's not all fun and games. Look for "a lot on intriguing turns" for the Shay family following Lisa's recent quest to find out if she was adopted. Plus, after Tessa's surprisingly emotional poem earlier this year about her absentee mom, Kapnek says fans will "get a deeper glimpse of Tessa's feelings about Mother's Day and what it means to her."
So will Tessa make it through Mother's Day in the 'burbs? Will Lisa find out the truth about her origins?
Suburgatory's season finale airs Wednesday at 8:30/7:30c. And don't forget to check back to TVGuide.com after the show airs for teases on what's ahead for Season 2.
