The work is Meyer's first release in two years. She said the novella began simply as a way for her to examine the events of Eclipse from another perspective. "I'd always considered The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner as something for the fans," Meyer said in a statement. "They have been so supportive of all things Twilight."

Meyer said as a thank you to the fans, the novella will be available for free at from June 7 to July 5, though donations are encouraged. All proceeds from the website as well as an additional $1 for each book sold in the U.S. from the first printing will be donated to the American Red Cross International Response Fund, which supports disaster relief efforts in Haiti and Chile.

The film version of Eclipse hits theaters on June 30.
