Stephen Colbert to Guest-Edit Newsweek

Stephen Colbert

Newsweek will have more truthiness — for one week only.

Stephen Colbert has been named guest editor of the recently redesigned news weekly's June 8 issue, The New York Observer reports.

Colbert, who will be the title's first guest editor in its 76-year history, landed the gig after impressing the heck out of editor Jon Meacham during a lunch.

"I was just very impressed with the range of his knowledge and he had an almost encyclopedic feel for anything that came up," Meacham said. "As we think about ways to both inform and surprise readers of the magazine, the notion of having him as a guest editor seemed like a good one."

Colbert's contributions will include penning an essay, designing the cover, writing an editor's note, handing out assignments and selecting pull-out quotes. There will also be a special feature with Colbert's unpublished letters to the editor he wrote to Newsweek when he was a kid.

And in true satirist fashion, Colbert will spice up the issue with the "conventional wisdom" of his ultra-right-winged alter ego.
