There's a good chance that the behind-the-scenes drama around the upcoming Steve Jobs biopic will trump any entertainment value the movie itself offers.
Emails recently hacked from Sony reveal testy (to put it mildly) exchanges between Sony Pictures co-chairman Amy Pascal and producer Scott Rudin regarding the project, which Rudin recently brought with him to Sony rival Universal.
According to the emails, Angelina Jolie became a peripheral player in the drama when she expressed annoyance that David Fincher would be directing the Jobs biopic instead of her version of Cleopatra, prompting Rudin to refer to Mrs. Brad Pitt as "a minimally talented spoiled brat" with a "rampaging spoiled ego." (Though Fincher was originally tapped to direct the film with a script by Aaron Sorkin, he later dropped out of the project, which will now be helmed by Danny Boyle.)
In one of the messages, Pascal — who repeatedly asks Rudin to set up a meeting or phone call with Jolie — tells Rudin: " You and I have [had] the two biggest fights we have [had] in years and we haven't even had a meeting yet. ... And you bet she is gonna make it uncomfortable for [Fincher]."
Rudin's response? "I'm not destroying my career over a minimally talented spoiled brat who thought nothing of shoving this off her plate for eighteen months so she could go direct a movie [the upcoming Unbroken]. I have no desire to be making a movie with her, or anybody, that she runs and that we don't. She's a camp event and a celebrity and that's all and the last thing anybody needs is to make a giant bomb with her that any fool could see coming."
Another highlight of the correspondence comes courtesy of Fincher himself, responding to a forward from Pascal. Upon receiving a news alert from TheWrap with the headline "'Girls' star Adam Driver to Play 'Star Wars' Villain; David Fincher Eyed for Steve Jobs Movie,' Pascal forwarded the link (which included a denial from Fincher that he'd be involved) to the director along with the succinct message "WTF."
Fincher responds minutes later with, "Adam Driver is a terrible idea, I'm with you."
