So You Think You Can Dance Winners: "We Finish Each Other's Sentences"

It was a partnership of tiny dancers destined for greatness.

The winners of So You Think You Can Dance's landmark 10th season are the first-ever pair to have also been dance partners from the beginning of the season. From that first performance, it was clear that petite contemporary dancer Amy Yakimaand hip-hop street dancer Du-Shaunt "Fik-Shun" Stegall had a special chemistry.

Fik-Shun is certainly grateful for having Amy by his side. "It meant a lot. America got the chance to connect with us and our partnership together," he toldTVGuide.com at Tuesday's finale taping. "I feel like it proved how strong it was that we made it to the end. It just felt so right dancing on stage with her that I wouldn't have traded in anyone else for her. It was supposed to be us."
Amy acknowledges that she and Fik-Shun are so comfortable in their partnership that they have a shorthand way of communicating now. "We kind of just finish each other's sentences," she said. "We know. We just look at each other. I'll say something, and he's like, 'I was already thinking that.' We just both understand where we're going and how much we want too give. We just have a great work ethic together."
Judges Nigel Lythgoe and Mary Murphy couldn't ignore the great way the couple worked either. In the Season 10 finale, the judges paid tribute to the pair with a spoof of Amy and Fik-Shun's "Let's Get It On" diner waitress and patron number. And while Lythgoe praises the duo's original routine, he's his own worst critic. "I would say to myself, 'Put your shoulders down. Not a bad performance, but the technique wasn't very good,'" he said with a laugh.

Congratulations on winning! How does it feel to be the most adorable winners?
Amy: Thank you! Oh, adorable. I like that.
Fik-Shun: Hearing that, that we're the most adorable too? That feels pretty good.
Which of the routines that you've danced together are your favorites?
Fik-Shun: Besides the bellhop one, I'd say definitely the contemporary one with Sonya [Tayeh]. It was our first time working together, and that one seriously pushed me to limits I didn't know I could reach or surpass. That one was definitelly a door-opener for me. It really gave me a chance to see how we work together ... Also now it makes me want to thank Sonya for pushing me so hard because she was the first one to drill into me that, "You did good; now do better. That was amazing; make it great." I took a lot from that. 
Amy: I think we both did. At the beginning I didn't know Fik-Shun. We were partnered together, and I was like, "He's a hip-hop dancer. He's untrained. He's never partnered before." I was a little nervous... But that first piece -- I don't know, something happened, he clicked on. He got everything right away. He wasn't dancing for himself. He was with me. And if that could happen in one week, I was like, "This is going to be a good season with him." I will always remember that first dance with him.

That one and the bellhop dance are definitely the most iconic dances for you as partners.
Amy: We got to be serious and we got to be super fun and sexy!
What did those bellhop outfits feel like to wear?
Fik-Shun: It was different definitely. It was kind of restrictive at first. But once you kind of get into character, you make it work for you. It's just fun. It all comes together in the end.
Amy: It was fun putting it back on again [tonight]. It was like, "Oh, OK let's do this again!"

How do you tap into your inner bellhop?
Amy: It's not really just about the bellhop. It's like --
Fik-Shun: We have to work, but we want to have fun instead of work. 
Amy: We're having our own party!
Fik-Shun: Let's just have a party. That was our thought process throughout the whole thing.

Which choreographers did you feel understood you the most and were able to get the most out of you?
Fik-Shun: It's Sonya. Just the way she works and brings things out of people, sometimes things you didn't realize were in you yourself. She doesn't take any excuses and doesn't want to hear reasons why you can't do something. She wants you to do it first and try your best and then say, "Oh, OK this is tough, but I'll work to get it." She definitely made a huge impression on me.
Amy: Definitely Sonya, but also Travis [Wall]. I think because he was also choreographing ["Wicked Game"] as well as dancing it, we had this bond that was kind of like -- it was unexplainable. It kind of clicked because the way he worked is the way I worked. We both wanted to make this memorable for both of us. It was really magical.

How will you celebrate your win?
Amy: We'll be with people that we love!
Fik-Shun: We're going to kick it with our So You Think You Can Dance family. It's going to be a blast.
You don't have much time before the Top 10 tour starts on Oct. 1.
Amy: We start tomorrow.
Fik-Shun:  Rehearsing, yeah.
Is there a particular stop or part of the tour you're excited about the most?
Amy: Michigan! It's the first city and my hometown. I cannot wait to show everyone and see everyone. Oh my gosh, I'm so excited.
Fik-Shun: I want to go everywhere. These are all places I've never been before for the most part. I'm ready to go see the rest of the world.

You won't be in those cities long enough to perform and see everything. When are you going to sleep?
Fik-Shun: On the bus. I can sleep anywhere, anytime.
Amy: He was sleeping on a surfboard that one time. He can sleep anywhere. He's a pro. I want that.
Fik-Shun:  What can I say? It's a gift and a curse!
