Shirley MacLaine to Receive AFI Life Achievement Award

Shirley MacLaine will receive the 40th AFI Lifetime Achievement Award, the American Film Institute announced Sunday. The 77-year-old actress, who won a Best Actress Oscar for 1983's Terms of Endearment, will be presented the award at a gala tribute in Los Angeles on June 7. Shirley MacLaine will receive the 40th AFI Lifetime Achievement Award, the American Film Institute announced Sunday.

The 77-year-old actress, who won a Best Actress Oscar for 1983's Terms of Endearment, will be presented the award at a gala tribute in Los Angeles on June 7. TV Land will broadcast the ceremony later that month.

"Shirley MacLaine is a powerhouse of personality that has illuminated screens large and small across six decades," Howard Stringer, chairman of the institute's board of trustees, said in a statement.  "From ingénue to screen legend, Shirley has entertained a global audience through song, dance, laughter and tears, and her career as writer, director and producer is even further evidence of her passion for the art form and her seemingly boundless talents."

She wrote first autobiographical book, Don't Fall off the Mountain, in 1970. It was followed by several other best-sellers addressing her beliefs about reincarnation, UFOs and spirituality.

Previous AFI lifetime achievement award recipients include Morgan Freeman, Mike Nichols and Michael Douglas.
