San Diego Charger Shawne Merriman denies reality star Tila Tequila's claims that he hurt her and says he was concerned for her safety when she appeared to be drunk.
"At the time, I was concerned about her welfare given the intoxicated state she appeared to be in and I encouraged her to stay until safe transportation could be provided," Merriman said in a statement. "We would all do our best to help a friend if we considered their actions to be detrimental to their personal safety. I in no way caused any harm to Ms. Nguyen, however, paramedics were called and she was examined but no injuries were reported."

Tila "Tequila" Nguyen accused Merriman of battery and false imprisonment on Sunday, claiming he choked and restrained her when she tried to leave his home. She signed a citizen's arrest and Merriman was taken into custody for two-and-a-half hours before posting bail, according to the Associated Press.
No charges have been filed, but the NFL star, who called Tequila an acquaintance, believes he will be cleared. "I think when it all surfaces, it will be a different situation. Period," Merriman said at practice on Monday. "It's kind of a tough situation where you think you're doing the right thing. I'm glad that everyone was safe at the end of the day. I don't think I will regret that part."
Tequila denied being drunk in a tweet — she has since locked her Twitter account — saying that she's allergic to alcohol. A club owner, however, says the Shot at Love star was drinking Saturday night at his hotspot, while Merriman only ordered water.
"It sounds like she's allergic to the truth," Stinagree owner James Brennan said.
